IDL Program Files
- Zip file containing the 3 IDL programs used to create the motion of the flux tube figures in the paper Cooling et al 2001 and in the Ph.D. thesis PLUS Robert Fear's correction to the mergeline function.
Note: March 2018 - for some reason the zip file is not downloading but it is there. If you want it, navigate to the file path directly and you can pick it up there.
zip 19kB
The 3 programs are in IDL and will run on Student Version (not tried on Windows Vista, but works ok on Windows XP). They are copiously commented so I hope they are self-explanatory.
Erratum: Robert Fear (now at Leicester University - identified that the originally posted version does not switch the merging line off (which another version did prior to a hard disk failure!). This was not material to the published work. However, Robert corrected the error. This is included in the download as 'correction.txt'. I have not amended the IDL programs themselves so you will need to do this yourself.
You can see the difference the amendment makes here

Parameter Catalogues
Notes
These were produced using additional programs based on the ones used for the thesis and 2001 paper.
Each is a sequence of plots for a full set of 27 IMF orientations using an IMF of magnitude 10nT. The first page of each sequence has a +X component, the second page a 0X component and the third page a -X component.
The arrow in the top right hand corner of each plot indicates IMF clock-angle only and is NOT to the same scale as the arrows in the main part of the plot. Check the foot of each page for a description of what is being displayed.

Catalogue Chapters
-
Catalogue Chapter 1 - The Magnetosheath Field.pdf format 1.5MB
Magnetosheath field at the magnetopause as derived from the Kobel and Fluckiger 1994 model for a 10nT IMF. Pages 2-4 show the direction in YZ projection of the magnetosheath field calculated at the magnetopause for the paraboloid magnetopause described in Cooling et al. 2001. Pages 5-7 show the contour plots for the magnetosheath field strength at the magnetopause under the same conditions.

- Catalogue Chapter 2 - Magnetopause Currents.pdf format 1.6MB
Magnetopause currents as derived from the Kobel and Fluckiger 1994 model for a 10nT IMF and a simple geometrical geomagnetic field model fitting a paraboloid magnetopause as described in Cooling et al. 2001. Pages 2-4 show the direction in YZ projection of the magnetopause currents. Pages 5-7 show the contour plots for the magnetopause current strength under the same conditions.

- Catalogue Chapter 3 - Magnetic Field Shears.pdf format 1.1MB
Magnetopause magnetic field shears as derived from the Kobel and Fluckiger 1994 model for a 10nT IMF and a simple geometrical geomagnetic field model fitting a paraboloid magnetopause as described in Cooling et al. 2001. Pages 2-4 show the contour plots of the magnetic field shears. Pages 5-7 show the same contours but with a 35nT and 50nT threshold for Delta Bq overplotted. Anti-parallelists will wish to confine their attention to the white/yellowish 'bananas' while those of a more component-orientated frame of mind, may wish to consider the yellower contours above the preferred threshold plots. The thresholds are exactly equivalent to the current strength contours - 28mA/m maps to 35nT, 40mA/m to 50nT, so you may add your own.
